Health and Safety

Chigwell Construction are a company that takes the Health, Safety and Welfare of staff and all third parties seriously.

The work we undertake is varied and brings us into contact with numerous clients and service users, including vulnerable residents and members of the public. It is therefore essential that we implement the right Policies and Procedures and engage competent staff.

Some of the measures the company has adopted to ensure the safety of all and maintain our exemplary safety record include;

Policies and Procedures

Chigwell Construction implement a series of well-established and up to date policies and procedures which are disclosed to all staff before they start work with the company. This includes company and site-specific inductions to ensure all specific contractual requirements are known to all staff.

The company Health & Safety Policy is also present on all sites and in head office, allocating responsibilities to all members of staff throughout the company.

Safety documents including Construction Phase Plans, Risk Assessments and Method Statements are formulated and issued to all staff prior to any works being completed.

We are committed to ensuring all staff receive a CRB check to enhanced level prior to carrying out any works on our behalf.

Our Asbestos Policy ensures a clear procedure is outlined to all staff; guidelines are set to avoid exposing staff, residents and third parties to asbestos.

Training

Safety cannot be achieved without engaging a competent workforce, knowledgeable in their work and able to keep risks to an absolute minimum. We therefore invest 0.40% of our annual turnover to the training of all staff. Operatives are required to possess a minimum set of training qualifications, therefore, we use the Investor in People accreditation.

These include:

  • Company and Project Specific Induction
  • CSCS
  • NVQ / City & Guilds
  • Manual Handling
  • Asbestos Awareness – UKATA
  • Work at Height
  • Customer Service Training
Accreditations

Chigwell sign up to third party accreditation bodies that independently verify company procedures in relation to compliance. This provides our clients with the assurance they require when engaging with a contractor that has been independently audited by a nationally recognised scheme. Company accreditations include; CHAS, Constructionline, EXOR, Safe Contractor, NHBC, Gas Safe, NICEIC.

Supply Chain

We are proud to work with a trusted supply chain who assist us in providing various services to our clients, including specialist works – such as asbestos removal or scaffolding – or to meet fluctuating workloads. Our approved supply chain is rigorously vetted and is subject to the same controls as our own workforce. This means that our clients and third parties can be sure works will be carried out safely and with the same standard of care as our own staff would exercise.

Full Time Health & Safety Manager

James Kempster

I am a fully qualified QHSE manager with Chigwell Construction and I have 3 years’ experience within the health and safety sector, with 1 year in my current role.

My job is to guarantee the safety of everyone involved with the project, ensuring that we are environmentally aware and that we observe the procedures in our project quality plan.

Along with Contracts Manager, Angela Willcock, we have produced a series of important management documents; The Health and Safety Plan, Site Waste Management Plan, Project Quality Plan, Site Specific Induction and Risk Assessments & Method Statements.

Upon agreeing these with the client, my ongoing role is to monitor site activities during unannounced visits and to make sure we are complying with our duties. I also provide training to staff while I’m on site in the form of toolbox talks as well as other training such as first aid, manual handling and fire safety.
